A Plantsman’s Garden
Private client: Henham, Herts
Brief: A large 1 acre garden owned by a keen plantsman who wanted more areas for growing plants, vegetables and show Dahlias. The garden had become overgrown, it lacked defined circulation routes and defined areas.
Design Solution: The long front garden has been divided into distinct spaces, with a lawn leading into an English rose garden enclosed by Yew hedging, a wooden gate through the hedge takes you into a wildlife garden with natural pond, rough grass areas and native trees. A group of overgrown conifers has been cut back to create a lighter woodland space, underplanted with shrubs and a path that takes you through to a small orchard.
To the back of the property the open lawn has been shaped into a semi-circular design using pathways and borders. A key area for the client was the introduction of a raised terrace built at the side of his polytunnel where compost bays, raised beds and a pathway leading to the greenhouse complete his horticultural needs
