Coastal Contrasts

Private client:  East Mersea, Essex

Brief:    This large coastal property is owned by a single chap who appreciates the good things in life.  The large garden was in need of a more proportionate patio space off the house / indoor swimming pool. An entertainment area was required with a water feature, bespoke built BBQ, hot tub, raised planters and areas to relax.  It was also important to maintain and enhance the wonderful views of the Blackwater estuary.

Raised water feature clad in sandstoneDesign Solution:  The client was keen on a geometric style which worked well for the patio spaces linking to the house.  Areas for patio dining, a spa, sun lounging and a raised planter are designed around a central water feature, with a separate lounge area directly off the living room & swimming pool.

Green screens of pleached hornbeams, either side entrance pergolas, separate the ‘living areas’ from the vegetable garden.

In contrast to the straight lines of the patio, sweeping curves take you away from the house down the length of the garden and to the estuary beyond, with long paisley shaped planting beds filled with swaying grasses.
